Travel Photography and the Reality We Don't Quite See

All those lovely photos of tourist locations we browse through everyday online (in the case of this article it's Instagram) have a not so pleasant side to them. Those with billions of views have something real cropped out or intentionally framed out. What we don't see are the long queues, the overcrowded landscapes, etc. A disappointing reality indeed.

Vertical videos are BAD for you!

I wouldn’t AND couldn’t deny that I hate vertical videos, i.e. videos taken by people that hold their intelligent phones in portrait mode. I tried to tell my family not to take videos that way. I tried to tell my close friends not to take videos that way.

Alas, somehow it just happens. Don’t tell anyone but I’ve accidentally done it a few times, too. I was just holding the phone in portrait mode and without thinking, opened up the camera app, switched to video and just... just... did it. I only realised when I replayed the video much later. Shameful, but I think it happens to most of us. Not many would intentionally want to do that.

Why I hate this kind of videos? Because if I play them on the computer screen or on a TV, I see very little of the video which will be in the middle and the rest are just plain wasted space. Yucks!

I would feel very sick and uneasy if these videos become generally accepted. Please don’t make me puke! Pleeeeeeeaaaaaaaaase!

To be clear, I don’t have any problems with vertical photos though in certain instances horizontal might look nicer.

Nose Hair, Fart Kung Fu and Slug Battles

I thought I've lost my mind when I was watching through Disney XD's snippets of two of its anime - Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo and Slugterra. The former has its characters fight with nose hair and farts while the latter is a fight between good and evil... with some bad ass mighty serious slugs.

Traffic Jams a Blur

I get increasingly impatient whenever I get stuck in a traffic jam. Sometimes, it's easy to spot inconsiderate drivers who make things worse. It blurs the line between good and evil. Ok, I might be exaggerating a little.

The Cons of In-App Purchase... in Self-Driving Cars

I hate the in-app purchase concept and Volvo took it too far. While the car can self-park and all, the feature that detects pedestrians is a separate purchase. Glad to know there were no serious injuries in the incident featured below.

Disorders Caused by... the Internet

It's only a matter of time before someone (in this case that someone is somebody in TechHive) does a compilation of all the common disorders caused by the Internet and I'm proud to tell you that I'm only suffering from less than half of these:

1. You keep thinking that your phone is ringing (or vibrating) in your pocket. - urgh! I'm a patient.
2. Nomophobia (derived from "no mobile phobia") where you panic whenever you don't have  your phone with you. - Guilty as charged!
3. Dizziness or nausea when online.
4. Social depression caused by envy because your online friends only talk about their happier and cool lives.
5. Constant urge to access the Internet. - I admit this!
6. Online gaming addiction.
7. Paranoid that you may be suffering from the diseases you read online.
8. Lazy to utilise the brain because everything is at the tip of your fingertips... errr or rather Google.

Wait till someone talk about what the smartphone is doing to us... we are doomed as we know it!

Panasonic Announces Superzoom with... 60X Optical Zoom!?

This is really shocking (for me, at least). How superzoom cameras had evolved since I last followed any after I got my DMC-FZ30. Panasonic just announced the DMC-FZ70, a superzoom bridge camera with a 60X optical zoom lens that goes from 20mm to 1,200mm (35mm equivalent)!!! It's got a 16.1 megapixels sensor and the lens is reasonably bright at this kind of zoom range with apertures f/2.8 - 5.9! Photo quality? That's probably another story...

Advance in Medicinal Tech: Head/Body Transplant a "Possibility"

Shocked and bemused... According to a Dr. Sergio Canavero of the University of Turin humans may one day be able to change bodies... or bodies can change heads...

In his paper, published in the open access journal Surgical Neurology International, Canavero outlines a plan to cool the subjects’ head and spine to 18ºC, use "clean cuts" to sever the two spinal cords, then drain the blood from the transplanted head before fusing the two spinal cords together with an inorganic polymer "glue." He cites supporting research in dogs and guinea pigs showing that the reattachment ought to be possible.

I was flipping digital Flipboard pages on the iPad and fell asleep for what I perceived to be a few seconds when I opened my eyes again to realised that I've landed on this page: Google Buys Motorola...

Google had successfully purchased Motorola Mobility! This could mean a lot of things and the first I thought of was the conflict of interest it may create with its "open source" Android mobile OS. What are you up to, Google? This couldn't be happening... at a time when I'm starting to have my interests in Apple growing within me...

I'm totally perplexed that part of the history lessons that I had gone through during my school days was conjured out of people's imaginations and this had to be my second blog post of 2012... the year the Mayans will invade us from space, harvest all our minerals and farm us like batteries to power they toys... or did I get that wrong, too?

Manually Shifting to Automatic Transmission

Huuuuuh? Did I read this correctly? From May 2012, there will be two types of driving licenses... a manual transmission one and an automatic transmission one... If I'm not careful, I might think that if I have a manual transmission driving license, I can't drive a car with auto transmission... and will there be a summon if a person with an auto transmission license is caught driving a car with manual transmission?

Automatically confused. Both ingenious and insane.

The HTC Android Phone Battery That Saved The Day

There are many movies where miracles happen in such a way that the hero gets shot but didn't die because the bullet hit a coin or a medallion or something in his pocket. Not in real life we don't hear much of those but today's different.

Two men were kicked out of a nightclub in Atlanta so they opened fire at the club but one of it strayed and hit a valet. The bullet went through the valet's jacket and through the HTC phone (nope, no details of what model it is), then stopped at the battery, a very red battery:

Insane: Panda Blasphemy!

I was in total shock while looking at my colleague flipping through the papers earlier today. A quick glance, I saw the image of a panda but without the trademark dark rings around the eyes. After blinking in astonishment a couple of times, I stopped my colleague from flipping and asked her to back track, all the while in panic that there may be a new discover of a panda with unique genes.

After some searching, I was relieved to find that it was nothing more than an advertisement for an alcoholic drink that brings liveliness back to the drinker. Phew!

Dell Streak has one mean screen!

Dell's huge 5" Android based internet-tablet kind of thing that is commonly known as a slate has one durable glass screen. Called the Gorilla Glass it can withstand multiple pen stabs without any stab wounds! My heart skipped a few bits when the dude in the video started the stabbing action! Fuuuuuuuu!
