Same Name, Different Meanings...

This interesting article from Star Online Columnists "A different name game" by Celeste Fong tells of different places with different meanings for the same names. Mentioned are the differences between China and here. Below are clippings of this informative piece:

NEAR dusk, my neighbour – a grandmother – was doing some light exercise in the open. She was walking briskly around the sculpture of Ding Yi, a prominent Chinese artist, outside our apartment units.

When we saw each other, we smiled and shared greetings: “Ni hao.”

“My surname is Zhang,” she said after I had introduced myself.

“Shall I address you as po po (a respectful designation for an elder among the Cantonese in Malaysia)?” I asked.

She did not protest but I could see she looked a little bewildered.

A week later, as I was having dinner with my local friend and another Malaysian friend, the local told us her gong gong (grandfather) and po po (grandmother) were visiting and would be staying with her for a few days.

“I don’t know what to say to them,” she said.

I was very puzzled as to why such a chatterbox like her did not have much to say to her grandparents.

“Her parents-in-law are visiting,” explained my Malaysian friend.

Only then did it dawn on me that the locals address their father-in-law as gong gong and mother-in-law as po po.

In Cantonese, or at least among my family, my mother addressed her late father-in-law (my late grandfather) as low yeh (or lao ye in Mandarin) and mother-in-law as lai lai (or nai nai in Mandarin).

After checking with the locals, I learnt that the northern Chinese women address their father-in-law as gong gong and mother-in-law as po po.

According to the Yahoo online dictionary, po po refers to the mother of one’s husband but, informally, it can be used to address someone as grandmother or as a respectful designation for an elder, but I reckon it would only be used as such in certain dialects.

And it is the formal way to address maternal grandfather and grandmother as wai gong and wai po respectively.

*****

In Malaysia, a xiao jie just means a Miss, like Zhang xiao jie means Miss Zhang, or a young lady.

But it’s not the case in China.

Many Malaysian men have learnt to address the ladies, young or old, as nu shi (similar to Madam) to show respect.

If you call a waitress xiao jie, you may offend her. However, it is all right to address a young lady working in an organisation or a company as xiao jie.

More often than not, you will hear people address young ladies working in a restaurant or hair salons as xiao mei (similar to little sister).

In China, xiao jie is not just a Miss or a young lady because it is also an occupation, but it’s not something you are proud of!

More Burst Pipes

I was so surprised to learn that the burst pipe in the Immigration @ Putrajaya was not the last. Read from Star Online Nation "Burst pipe brings down hall ceiling in Putrajaya", it is now the Entrepreneurial Development and Cooperative Ministry’s turn! This incident happened at the multi-purpose hall on Saturday when one of the pipes that supplied water to sprinklers burst, causing water to accumulate and later bringing down the ceiling with it due to its weight. Sigh. Sadness with a touch of madness.

PANIC! Cooking Oil Shortage?

Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Shafie Apdal said that there is no shortage for cooking oil and could be bought from anywhere... reported Star Online Nation "Shafie: No cooking oil shortage".

The minister was commenting on a report by the
Consumers’ Association of Penang (CAP) that consumers could not find cooking oil in 1kg plastic containers for the past two weeks. Pulau Pinang State Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Committee chairman Lau Chiek Tuan was saying the 1kg packaging was discontinued due to rise in crude palm oil prices.

Faster and More Reliable Internet Connection In The Future...?

Malaysia's Telekom will lead a consortium of companies to build a USD$500 million 20,000km underwater fibre optic cable. This is in the wake of the recent Taiwan earthquake where Asia's internet connection was disrupted after the link was broken.

Dubbed the Asia-America Gateway, this will surely provide better connectivity and, hopefully, increase efficiency. Other companies involve include AT&T Inc. from the United States, the British Telecom Global Network Services, Eastern Communications Philippines Inc., India's Bharti AirTel, Thailand's CAT Telekom, Indonesia's Indosat and PT Telkom, Telecom New Zealand International, Singapore's StarHub and Australia's Telstra.

The construction for this project is awarded to
Paris-based Alcatel-Lucent and Japan's NEC Corp.

Our First Submarine

From Star Online Nation "Six names shortlisted for Malaysia's first submarine":

LUMUT: RMN chief Laksamana Datuk Ramlan Mohamed Ali said Friday the navy had shortlisted six names for the Scorpene-model submarine that would be Malaysia’s first, and expected to be delivered by mid-2009.

He said the six names had been selected from the 801 suggestions that the navy had received from the public in a contest launched to name the submarine.

Malaysia will obtain the Scorpene submarine from Armaris, a joint venture between French shipbuilder DCN and Thales, the prime contractor for the Malaysian submarine programme.

Terrifying Fact: 6 Malaysians Suffer Stroke Every Hour

Update 25 April 2007:

More facts and figures from New Straits Times "Stroke: You may be next... it's the nation’s No. 4 killer disease" such as stroke is the 4th most common killer disease in Malaysia, many victims die within a month with only 10% that managed to recover fully. It also talked about the cause of stroke, mainly due to lack of exercise and unhealthy diets, as well as hypertension.

*****

An average of 6 Malaysians suffer stroke every hour. Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr. Chua Soi Lek said:

“It is surprising that a total of about 52,000 Malaysians get a stroke in a year when it is the most preventable of all life-threatening health problems."

Vehicles Entering Malaysia Still Free

Vehicles from Thailand and Singapore may still enter Malaysia for free for the sake of Visit Malaysia Year 2007, according to Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor. The initial purpose was to offset the petrol subsidy by the government that was lost to these vehicles when they fill in petrol within the country.

Malaysian Broadband Quite Bad

In Star Online Nation's "Broadband not up to par", a study done by Multimedia University (MMU) involving the broadband services in Malaysia, Singapore and Japan revealed that our country's broadband is "quite bad". Yikes! The reason cited was we lack of qualified people to manage and employ broadband services here. This sounds very sad and very bad.

When Is News Too Much?

A Reuters editor grappled with a dilemma with the reporting of the recent Virginia Tech shootings in Reuters Blog. The editor considered this in both sides of the world - as a reader and an editor:

"...when something horrible happens I’m drawn to find out as much as possible."

"...often recoil at the sheer weight of the horror and sometimes the accumulated graphic detail does seem too much."

Reuters also posted some comments from readers:

"I am sadden to see Reuters promoting the senseless acts of the Virginia Tech terrorist… Talk about it, talk about why, in hopes of preventing this sort of thing in the future, but do not play his videos or display his photos."

"With the help of the news media, [Cho Seung-Hui] has achieved his place in history… It was NOT necessary to disclose Cho’s video. NBC had a choice."

"Those of us seeking solid news do not need to be greeted with this visual. Please have respect for those who are suffering most and remove these disgusting images with those of just Cho’s face."

Termites = Cockroaches

It is true! Science and technology have come a long way and the latest development reveals that despite looking like ants, termites belong to the cockroach family. Here is a paragraph that more or less sums it up from LiveScience.com Animal Domain "Termites Are Actually Social Cockroaches":

After conducting the most exhaustive genetic analyses yet into the subject, studying 107 different species of termites, cockroaches and mantises from across the globe, entomologist Paul Eggleton at the Natural History Museum in London and his colleagues now conclude termites are indeed a family of cockroaches, findings detailed online April 5 in the journal Biology Letters.

A New Kind of Camera

How about a digital camera that looks like a locket? Nice way to discreetly snap images, yeah? Well, Kodak came up with such a conceptual camera called Kodak 1881. Photos are taken by tapping the locket. The locket could be opened to reveal an LCD within which could then be used as a viewfinder. Things people come up with these days. Probably nice to see in a Mission: Impossible or a James Bond movie but in real life...?

Yummy Cantonese Fried Rice and Noodles?

It's almost midnight and only now I stumble upon this article from Star Online Central "It’s cheap and good at gongfu chau stall" indicating that this stall is really clean, the cook is really friendly and the food is really tasty . Come on people, let's set a time during one of these weekends...

Cleaner Water In Klang Valley

The Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor (Syabas) begins cleaning water pipes (before individual meters in premises) in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya even without having any complaints lodged. This is done by flushing out sediments and residues collected in the pipes known as the air-scouring technique.

This initiative will benefit 7 million consumers and affects 13,000
km of 100mm to 150mm pipes. Besides that, consumers are advised to clean out our water tanks every six months. Never knew that.

From LifeScience.com Health SciTech "Study: In Nude Photos, Men Look At Faces First"

The results of what both men and women look at when presented with sexual photos:

  • Women take longer time when studying photos of couples having sex
  • Both men and women look at genitals comparably
  • Women look at different parts of the bodies at different hormonal states

Malaysian Footwear Suffers Inflation

Increase in plastic and leather materials crucial in footwear is quoted as the main factor for the increase in footwear price. Besides that, 80% of raw materials used to manufacture footwear are imported. Very soon, the Malaysian Footwear Manufacturers Association will impose this 10% rise in footwear though there is still yet to be a fixed date.

The last increase was seven years ago, according to Star Online Nation "Footwear to cost 10% more soon".

Star Online Nation "Few Malaysians satisfied with their sex life" reports the Durex Sexual Wellbeing Global Survey 2007/08 findings. Of particular interests about Malaysians:

  1. Only 38% of 1,026 Malaysians surveyed are satisfied with their sex lives
  2. 40% of Malaysian women are satisfied compared to 37% of men

  2. Normal KTM train takes 7 hours.
  3. Last year KTM had 600,000 passengers taking the KL-Singapore route.
  4. KTM is Malaysia's unprofitable railway service.
  5. KTM's KL-Singapore route is targeted to be fully double tracked by 2012.
  6. KTM gets RM40 million and other additional subsidies from the government per year for its maintenance of the track and fuel.

Maid Scandal!

Horrors! It seems our country is plagued with runaway maids and maid agencies have something to do with it! There had been 30,000 cases of runaway maids for the past 5 years and there are many cases of maid agencies encouraging the maids to do so after 3 months (the agencies do not need to replace maids that run away after this period). After they ran away, these maids will be moved to other states where they will be posted to other employers where they will run away again...

This can be done up to four times as maids can legally stay in the country for 12 months from their first entry.

Victims are encouraged to report to the Immigration Department so that it can launch an investigation.

Power Outage

Was in the middle of my shower when my house was hit by power failure. This happened last night when it was really hot and humid. Thought it was just a normal power failure until I was greeted by darkness when driving around to get some air and a drink. This morning, while I was reading The Sun, I discovered the power failure covered a large area such as Damansara and Kelana Jaya.

Now, reading Star Online, there is more information on how massive the failure was: Up to 40,000 homes! Cause is still unknown and there is an apology from the country's electricity provider: Tenaga Nasional Bhd would like to apologise to all its customers for the power supply disruption.

Statistics: Malaysian Women Smokers Doubled

According to Health Ministry parliamentary secretary Datuk Lee Kah Choon, 8% (or 480,000) of the estimated six million smokers were women. Several years ago, women smokers were only 4% of the total smokers.

Burst Pipe Explanation Revealed

This is about a recent pipe burst in the immigration HQ in Malaysia's administration capital, Putrajaya.

Star Online Nation "Works Minister: Pipe installation at Immigration HQ flawed from the start" reported that Works Minister Datuk Seri S Samy Vellu said the piping was not conforming to the specifications issued by the Public Works Department: From the beginning, the pipes were fixed without being coated with couplings and they were not anchored to the wall.

Such a statement does raise lots of concerns, doesn't it? What will be done for the rest of the building? Check all the piping from end to end? If all are flawed, then how? Get the contractor to rectify it all? Or will the government pay for others' mistakes? Who will take the blame for accepting the building from the contractor?

The Ball and The Wall

Finally, after posting various photographs taken by others, I can post something taken by me again! Here it is:

The Ball and The Wall

It was taken at a local park near where I stay. Someone left a deflated basketball there and it was right next to a wall with a crack. Thought it looked interesting. And I was also trying to be artistic. :P

It took me some time to figure out what title to give this. Consulted a few people and eventually came to this self-explanatory title. :)

I just found out what charcoal is made of. All this while, I thought charcoal = coal, coal = charcoal. Another ignorant side of me. Learning something new every day, getting less ignorant by the day. :D

Holy Mad Cows! Big Discrepancies in Crime Rate Statistics!

I couldn't believe this! Even statistics for crime rates in an area called Sentul could have big differences. Deputy Internal Security Minister Datuk Mohd Johari Baharum said (quoting from Star Online Nation "Johari blows his top over conflicting crime figures") the crime index in Sentul, a highly populated neighbourhood in the city, had risen by 82.2%, with snatch thefts shooting up by 600%, making it one of the city’s most troubled spots.

That was on Sunday. On Monday, Federal CID director Comm Datuk Christopher Wan Soo Kee subsequently “revised” the index to 10.1% with snatch thefts down to 36.6%. (!!!)

Which is the truth? :O

I am very sleepy now but I must post about this before I go to sleep: Star Online Nation brought another sad and backward thinking kind of news to us. Sri Gading MP Datuk Mohamad Aziz said that women and men should be allocated different coaches while in the LRT. He said he was speaking on behalf of some people who were uncomfortable due to rubbing of bodies during rush hours in the trains. Wonder if anyone will be speaking on behalf of him.

Smoking Helps to Determine Baby's Sex

Via Digg from Physorg.com:

A study by pediatricians at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine indicated that parents that smoke during conception will have up to 50% chance of having baby girls because substances in cigarettes such as nicotine inhibit sperms carrying male chromosomes from fertilising eggs. Besides that, chances of miscarriage will increase. Pregnant women exposed to second hand smoke are also less likely to give birth to male infants.

This study was done on 9,000 women who gave birth between 1998 and 2003 at the Liverpool Women's Hospital so this data must have some validity to it.

Replacing Air-Conditioners In New Housing Estates

At Sarawak, Malaysia, at least. The state's Housing Minister Datuk Abang Johari Tun Openg said that a study is currently underway to use chilled water system instead of individual air-conditioners for a new housing estate. This will help to cut electricity costs. Chilled water systems are currently used in various shopping complexes, commercial and industrial buildings where chilled water are piped from a few centralised chillers to various lots across the complex or building.

Source: Star Online Nation "Chilled water system for housing estates"

However, this will also bring out a main issue where the majority of maintenance will be shared. How this cost will be distributed to the houses will be crucial. We have seen various condominiums where owners do not pay maintenance fees...

Came across this interesting error in translation via Digg:

The Hypnotic Robber

Police caught a robber that hypnotises victims by spitting on them, putting them in a daze so that he could relief them of their valuables. The robber, believed to have an accomplice who managed to escape, preyed on sales girls. The robber got caught within 30 minutes of his last robbery after his victim reported to the police when she came to. The funny thing was, the robber got caught when police went back to the scene... perhaps he, too was in a daze? Would be nice if the police would reveal how he managed to hypnotise people this way.

Miracles Do Happen #2... The iPod

Update 9 April 2007:

Looks like it is not so much of a miracle, according to engadget's follow-up here. The iPod was not the lifesaver. It was the soldier's body armour. He did not even feel the bullet until he went looking for his iPod. :(

*****

From engadget "iPod takes bullet for soldier":

Kevin Garrad of the 3rd Infantry Division looks to have gotten a little assistance from an unexpected source while on a street patrol in Iraq recently, when the iPod in his pocket got in the path of a bullet fired at close range, slowing it down enough that it didn't pierce his body armor.

So there is another reason for iPods to be around!

Even Cigarettes Have Price War

Star Online Nation "Health Ministry wants price war among cigarette companies to stop" reports that there is a price war going on between cigarette companies. A 20 sticks pack can be had for RM3 versus the normal RM7.40. Wow, that sounds like trouble and the Health Ministry acknowledges that. There is a two week time limit for this to stop or the ministry will impose a minimum price so that cigarettes do not get too cheap as this might encourage smoking.

Also, the government is proposing that graphic warnings be printed on 60% of the cigarette packs. The tobacco companies are appealing for 50%. Decision has yet to be made because these kind of things take time to figure out.

Miracles Do Happen...

... and it is proven in Beijing, China when a woman who fell off from a sixth floor balcony landed on a huge pile of excrement which workers emptied from that same building's septic tank. The woman suffered slight injuries. This is a case when you sometimes have to believe things happen for a reason...

Tear A Telephone Directory With Your Bare Hands!

Ok, registering bloggers aside, let's talk about something more serious here. Ever imagine ripping a super thick telephone directory apart with just your bare hands? Seems like it is possible, according to wikiHow's "How to Rip a Phonebook in Half"!!! I won't go into details because I don't really quite understand it, but looks like it is real!

An alternative method that requires baking is also featured in this same article. Kids, don't try this anywhere.

Blogger Registration May Be Required

Update 7:22pm, 8 April 2007:

From Star Online TechCentral "Shaziman denies censorship goal"

"The plan to register bloggers is merely to assess the situation and keep track on how many bloggers there are in the country and on the information provided by them. It has nothing to do with censoring the contents in the blogs," he said, adding that the plan has yet to be finalised by the Government.

*****

Bloggers blogging through locally hosted sites carrying the ".my" suffix may soon need to register themselves, according to Deputy Energy, Water and Communications Minister Datuk Shaziman Abu Mansor. According to him, it is one of the methods the government is pursuing to prevent spread of malicious and negative content over the net. WHAT??? Next thing you know, there will be no more internet because all these can never stopped.

Mobile Coverage to Reach 100% End 2007?

Clipped from The Star Online Nation "Telcos agree to share network"

KUANTAN: Cellphone service providers have agreed to provide domestic roaming in the country, a move that will also help expand nationwide coverage quickly.

Maxis, Celcom and DiGi subscribers will have seamless access as long as one of those companies has a network in the area.

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) announced yesterday that the companies have agreed in principle to share their networks.

MCMC chairman Datuk Dr Halim Shafie said that introducing domestic roaming, especially in remote areas, is a faster way to blanket the country with mobile coverage.

"We have discussed this with the telcos who agree that rather than all of them going into the same area, it is better and more cost-effective for one to enter the place and for the rest to share the network," he told newsmen after opening MCMC's eastern regional office at Sri Kuantan Square here.

According to Halim, 47 sites around the country have been identified for the introduction of domestic roaming, and the areas would be divided among the telcos.

MCMC hopes the current 85% nationwide coverage would increase to 100% by the end of the year.

Free Info On Traffic Situation

Clipped from Star Online Nation "Free info on traffic situation"

KAJANG: Road users can now obtain information on real-time traffic conditions on several highways via variable message signboard (VMS), web portal, short messaging system (SMS) and multimedia messaging system (MMS).

The good news is that all this will be for free, announced Works Minister Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu.

He said the Malaysian Highway Authority’s national traffic management centre, which was based on Intelligent Transportation System (ITS), would monitor the traffic situation on 11 highways.

“Through the ITS concept, the centre is able to collect, store and analyse traffic data and disseminate them to road users through various medium,” he said at the launch of the centre at the MHA headquarters yesterday.

The minister later told reporters that the centre comprised three phases, with the first two phases having been completed.

The first phase includes integration of the centre with the Lebuhraya Damansara Puchong (LDP)/ Sprint Highway, New Pantai Expressway (NPE), Kesas and Penang Bridge while the second phase covers the West Coast Expressway, North-South Highway (Plus), Guthrie Corridor Expressway (GCE), and development of a web portal, SMS and MMS for road users. The third phase will cover other highways later this year.

Road users can obtain real-time traffic information on highways via www.llmtrafik.gov.my.

New Operating Hours For Government Offices

Clipped from Star Online Nation "Government offices to open from 7.30am to 5.30pm"

PUTRAJAYA: All government offices will open half-an-hour earlier and close 30 minutes later from June.

However, civil servants will not be required to work longer hours. Instead, they will clock in for work at three different times – from 7.30am till 4.30pm, from 8am till 5pm, and from 8.30am till 5.30pm.

In effect, the offices will be open from 7.30am to 5.30pm.

The timetable is the same for those working in Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu, except that they will observe Friday and Saturday as the days off.

Public Service Department corporate communications unit chief Hasniah Rashid said the decision to implement the system nationwide was taken after it was found that staggered working hours had contributed to higher productivity among civil servants.

Currently, government offices in Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya open from 7.30am to 5.30pm with a lunch break between 1pm and 2pm. On Fridays, the lunch break is between 12.15pm and 2.45pm.

Staggered working hours from 7.30am to 6.30pm were introduced 10 years ago in departments such as the National Registration and the Immigration Departments, to provide longer hours of service to the public.

About a year later, the working hours were revised to 5.30pm and implemented in government offices in Kuala Lumpur.

Cuepacs welcomed the plan but said the Government should consider problems faced by civil servants.

“For instance, staff whose houses are far from their offices, who have transportation problem or who have to rush their children to school or the babysitter in the morning should not be forced to work at 7.30am. They should be allowed to choose working hours suitable for them. Otherwise, it will be a torture for them,” Cuepacs president Omar Osman said.

He also expressed regret that Cuepacs was not briefed so that it could explain the matter to its 850,000 members.

MTUC president Syed Shahir Syed Mohd also said the welfare of civil servants should be taken into consideration.

“The staff should be comfortable with their working hours. If they face problems coming to work on time, the counter service will be affected. We should not compromise the quality of service,” he said.

Fomca secretary-general Mohd Shani Abdullah said the Government should create public awareness of the new working hours. It should also consider opening counters during lunch hour, he said.

At Last, How April Fool Came About

1st April came and went and I did not realise its significance. These days, my group of friends and colleagues don't play any April Fool jokes anymore. I never knew how April Fool came about. I got fooled way too many times and fooled way too little people and yet I still did not know how April Fool originated. And I did not bother to find out either until its origins came to me in the form of About: Inventors "April Fool's Day" article:

The History of April Fool's Day
In sixteenth-century France, the start of the new year was observed on April first. It was celebrated in much the same way as it is today with parties and dancing into the late hours of the night.

The First April Fool's Day
Then in 1562, Pope Gregory introduced a new calendar for the Christian world, and the new year fell on January first. There were some people, however, who hadn't heard or didn't believe the change in the date, so they continued to celebrate New Year's Day on April first. Others played tricks on them and called them "April fools." They sent them on a "fool's errand" or tried to make them believe that something false was true.

Post-tsunami violence against women on rise: report

Clippings from Reuters article of thesame title here:

By Onkar Pandey

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - Women who survived the 2004 Asian tsunami face heightened risks of violence, impoverishment and lack of privacy at relief camps in several nations, a report released on Saturday said.

"They would often beat their wives after getting drunk and would force them to have sex in the camps, sometimes in front of children," said Sriyani Perera, ActionAid International's women rights coordinator for Asia.

The report covered five countries -- Sri Lanka, the Maldives, Thailand, India and Somalia -- and more than 7,000 women were interviewed.

"We were shifted to a place where there was no work and no food to feed our children," a woman from Tamil Nadu was quoted as saying in the report.

"I sold my kidney and got a small amount. They did not give me the promised amount. Now I am suffering with heavy abdominal pain and I can't work."

The report said women were often not consulted in the distribution of relief -- material or financial -- and men often misused funds for drinking, leading to further abuse of women.

The report said sex tourism was on the rise in coastal areas of tsunami-affected regions in India as hotels were being built near the shoreline.

"The government doesn't allow fishermen to live within 500 meters (1,650 feet) of the seashore," Magline, 38, who is from a fishing community in the southern Indian state of Kerala, told Reuters.

"The coast has been leased to sand miners and hotels leading to influx of outsiders," she said. "This has affected our local culture and given rise to sex tourism."

The report has been released ahead of a summit of South Asian leaders in New Delhi from April 3-4 and its authors want the governments to pay heed to the plight of women survivors of the tsunami and provide them better protection.

A Whopping 4.9 million Unregistered Voters

Election Commission (EC) deputy chairman Datuk Wan Ahmad Wan Omar said there are 4.9 million Malaysians that are eligible to vote have not registered themselves. Phew! I am so glad that my parents forced me to register many years back. Take note (from the deputy chairman):

"Malaysians like to do things at the last minute – even for registering as voters. But they forget that there is a three-month period for their names to be validated into the electoral roll."

Stain-free, Smudge-free and Fog-free Glass!

A newly developed coating with two layers (top layer has Teflon-like molecules that repel oil/grease and the bottom layer is a water-loving solvent) will make glass repel stains, smudges and fog. The two layers will work together where "water coats the surface, forming a smooth thin layer rather than beading up, and oil is repelled".
